In today’s New York Times , Beth Greenfield previews the upcoming Iowa State Fair (8/9 – 8/19):
More than a million visitors attend the Iowa fair each year, drawn to its float-filled kickoff parade, large livestock show, carnival rides, competitions like tractor pulls and a mullet contest, and performers — this year to include Joe Walsh, Alice Cooper and the American Idol Tour. And then there is the Butter Cow — a bovine sculptured from 600 pounds of butter and standing five feet high. “There’s always a line to see it,” Ms. Chappell said. Each year, a companion butter sculpture is added to reflect an aspect of pop culture — this year, it’s Harry Potter.
