Isn't it good, Norwegian Wood. · May 7, 09:38 AM
Writer Jonathan Glancey extols the virtues of contemporary Norwegian architecture in today’s Guardian Unlimited:
The Norwegians’ architecture stands up to glaciers, snowstorms and dangerous drivers – and it still looks beautiful. They could teach us a few things…To make a modern economy thrive in extreme climatic and geographical conditions, Norwegian architects, engineers and designers have had to be resourceful, matter-of-fact and highly inventive.
We think this description also sums up the quiet genius of Norwegian architect Wenche Selmer (1920–1998)—one of the few women who gained prominence among European architects in the mid-twentieth century. Combining local building traditions with modern conveniences, her designs evoke Norway in all its rugged beauty and smart Scandinavian pragmatism.
Norwegian Wood is the first book on her life and architecture. Fourteen of her beautiful wooden cabins and houses are featured in detailed descriptions, plans, and a wealth of archival images and newly commissioned color photography.
